The Science of Reading is the new buzzword in education, and it’s not going anywhere. Decodable readers, which are a huge part of the Science of Reading, can seem overwhelming at first. Why? Because they are designed to help you teach phonics in a very systematic and sequential way. However, it doesn’t come with a detailed lesson plan. Plus, there’s so much to organize when you’re setting up your small group lessons. So, I have developed a decodable lesson planner to help you plan your day faster!
Click on the picture below to get a step-by-step guided run through on how to use this planner.
How to Use the Decodable Lesson Planner
I love to have options when I am lesson planning. I have my decodable lesson planner available in both the digital and printable format. The printable format is available both in color and in black and white.
Oftentimes, I will use both the printable and digital planner. For example, I will fill it out by hand, then I will put it into my computer. By doing so, I can easily put my lesson plans online for my parents, or I can send them to my principal.
Using the digital version of the decodable planner makes your job even easier because it will auto populate the flash cards you will use in your focus words for the week. You can use these focus cards for memory games or during your small group lessons.
Access your Lessons with a Simple Table of Contents
Sometimes when you purchase a lesson plan that’s already done, it can be difficult to navigate. I made this planner completely user friendly to make your job even easier! This decodable lesson planner comes with an easy to use table of contents. All you have to do is click on the images, and it will take you to the page you need.
Organize Your Lessons with a Checklist
If you don’t know where to start or where to go next, this checklist is the perfect cheat sheet to keep next to your desk for reference. This checklist tells you what is included in your SOR lesson and is separated into various sections:
- Before reading
- During reading
- After reading
In addition to being separated into manageable parts, it is also color coded for those of us who need that visual reminder. The green areas on the checklist correspond to the green areas in the lesson plan as do the other colors.
What Do You Do?
If you’re anything like me, you have so many activities it’s easy to miss one. This decodable lesson plan comes with a list of all the activities that you are going to do with each lesson. So, when you are sitting with your small group and you need another activity or a different activity, you can easily pull out a new activity. If you sue them, you can refer back to this sheet to figure out what the standards are that you taught without having to look them all up.
Knowing Your Standards for Decodable Lesson Plans
One of the hardest parts of starting the Science of Reading is it is all new. Having the expanded standards with the decodable lesson planner takes the work away from you. Plus, if you’re a first year teacher, you’ll be able to familiarize yourself with the standards to help you with future lessons.
Decodable Lesson Plans
Next, I have a page that has all of the lesson plans mapped out. I like to give each of my groups a color and assign them work that way. Then, all you need to do is type in which group you’re teaching and go to their lesson plan. This plan will tell you what book you’re looking at, the decoding focus, and the focus skill you will be focusing on. In addition to the physical plan, there are always post reading discussion questions you can use to check for understanding.
Follow Up Activities
All of this is a great place to start, but I didn’t stop there! There are also follow up activities that you can use to check comprehension and offer more practice to those who need to focus on a specific skill. You can also use games, worksheets, and literacy centers for this part.
The Science of Reading is new to many of us which can be overwhelming. Having a Decodable Lesson Planner that is ready to go will take the stress off of you and make teaching your focus instead of spending quality time trying to figure it out.
