I don’t know about you, but I get really overwhelmed when trying to narrow down which picture books to feature in my classroom. We all read to our students every day, of course. Reading aloud is an essential part of any primary reading program, but sometimes I wonder if we spend enough time checking that they truly understand what the stories are about. There’s so much information hidden deep in the pages of some books.
That’s why I decided to create my own line of book companions to picture books. It’s called Picture Book Pals. And it’s unrolling slowly. We started with 4 popular winter books for January and now are working on some Valentines, Lunar New Year and BLM books for February. I can’t wait to show you what we’ve come up with.
Each book is carefully chosen for availability, monthly themes and topics, and the number of online resources there are to support it. Who wants to spend time trying to track down online resources. Don’t worry, I have already done so and provided links and QR codes to them. I tried to find videos of each story being read aloud by the author, to help with online learning too.
In Picture Book Pals, there are pre-reading activities to build vocabulary and connect to prior knowledge. There are activities that can be done during reading, like writing down questions they have, and also many activities to do after the first reading. I strongly suggest that when you focus on a book like this that you make sure to read it several times that week.
Each book is part of a monthly bundle which is available for a big discount. I hope you enjoy working with Picture Book Pals. Don’t just take my word for it.
