Every month presents a new opportunity for us to dive into a different theme. Last month, we had great January reads with Picture Pals that focused on winter fun! In February, we have the Lunar New Year, Black History Month, and Valentine’s Day to think of. When you’re choosing February reading activities, you want to be as inclusive as possible. This is made easy with these four amazing books that all come with Picture Book Pals!
What are Picture Book Pals?
Picture Book Pals are a great way to read picture books with your students. In the Picture Book Pals filled with February reading activities, your students will have the chance to read texts on a comprehension level as well as a more analytical level. You can help your students with comprehension with sequencing activities that are available in the form of pictures and words. You can also use comprehension questions and activities that go beyond sequencing. Then, your students can go through the writing process by outlining, drafting, editing, and revising, then finally publishing their work. Beyond all of these great activities that delve into rigorous reading strategies, you also get bonus sheets! These bonus activities are fantastic for early finishers or for bell ringers.
February Reading Activities Pair Great with The Runaway Wok
In this February book, your students will get the chance to hear a magical Chinese New Year Tale. In the story, a young boy, Ming, purchases an old wok that turns out to be magical! The wok provides for the poor family. The Runaway Wok is a fantastic tale for themes about good and evil. In addition, with The Runaway Wok Picture Book Pal, your students can use directed writing activities to talk about the wok’s adventures. With this February reading activity, your students will be asked to go through the whole writing process: planning, drafting, editing and revising, and publishing.
Go Back in Time with The Story of Ruby Bridges
February is Black History month and Ruby Bridges is a wonderful story to share with students this time of year! Ruby Bridges was a brave young girl who dared to integrate an elementary school in the south during the 1960’s when segregation was at an all-time high. This wonderful tale tells about her bravery and what she had to overcome. Because The Story of Ruby Bridges is a story that may be harder to comprehend, using The Story of Ruby Bridges Picture Book Pal comprehension questions will be very important! Many of our students don’t understand what life was like for people of color. This can be a shocking new idea for many students. However, it is a fantastic February reading activity.
Skin Like Mine teaches self love with February Reading Activities
Another book to pair with The Story of Ruby Bridges is the heartwarming story Skin Like Mine. This wonderful tale follows Brittany Baker a 10-year-old-girl with her own unique fashion sense. When she moves to a new state and goes to a new school, she starts to see the differences between her and some of the other students. This sends Brittney on a difficult journey we all struggle with. Eventually, she learns how to love the skin she is in. Skin Like Mine Picture Book Pals includes a wonderful chance for students to explore Brittney’s transformation. Using pictures and words for two fun sequencing events will make sure this February reading activity is understood. In addition to sequencing, students can use the writing portion of the Picture Book Pal to talk about their ideas in relation to the story.
