Writing can seem like a daunting task for students and sometimes for teachers too. One way to combat this dread is to add a fun 3D element by integrating writing and art together! How? With these easy bulletin board popping 3D art activities with a writing element you and your students will love.
Why Integrate Writing and Art
Many of my students are reluctant writers especially when it comes to anything creative. Coming up with an idea can be a difficult task for many students even those who donโt typically struggle. I have found putting writing with a fun activity, like creating a 3D art piece, students are less reluctant to write. These 3D Art Activities work best with students in kindergarten, first, and second grade.
How Integrating Writing and Art Works
Making reluctant writers not so reluctant sounds like a dream come true. It totally is and itโs so simple! All you need are these 3D Art Activities that come with the following:
- A low-prep 3D Art Activity with step-by-step directions
- A blank template for creative writing
- Differentiated worksheets to get students started with paragraph and story writing
- Themed paper for a final draft
- Display ideas for your bulletin board
There are three great 3D Art Activities available to you and they all have the great resources listed above. Your students can create the sun, a cap, or a kite! Once you have the 3D Art Activity template, all you need to do is get your students started writing!
Beginning the Integrating Writing and Art Process
This year, my group of students had horrible fine motor skills. Therefore, their printing skills were not the best. So to start with, I had my students copy a poem that went with the art project for the writing component. This made them more comfortable with the physical part of writing. Then, I used the sentence starters as part of various lessons so students would get used to them. Finally, I was able to let students write on their own.
Differentiating Writing
To make this activity accessible to all students, I have made differentiated paragraphs and short story prompts. For younger students, you can use fill-in the blank worksheets to help them write the perfect paragraph or short stories. For older students, you can use the sentence starters or the outline formats. I have always found using these prior to the project to be incredibly helpful. In addition, when you use any sentence starter, you are teaching your students how to start their own writing.
The best part is you get all of the organizers with the 3D Art Activity so you can use all of them in your classroom. This makes differentiating for students in your room that much easier.
Emphasizing Drafting While Integrating Writing and Art
Another part integrating writing and art is showing students how polished a final draft needs to be. While students can use the sentence starters or fill in the blank worksheets to get started, they arenโt going to put that on their completed work of art.
Instated, they are going to use the themed paper that is glued or a part of the 3D art element. This shows the importance of drafting, editing, and revising. While this is usually the hardest thing to get students to do, rewriting, having an incentive, like a perfect piece of artwork, can be incredibly persuasive.ย
These 3D Art Activities are perfect for integrating writing and art while boosting your students’ creative writing confidence! Students love to make them and work hard to make them perfect. Why? Because they are going to be on display for parents and other teachers to see! When you can help students take pride in their writing, they are sure to go above and beyond expectations.
