We have been reading since the beginning of the school year; however, the fun is not done yet! Even though the end of the school year is near, it’s no reason not to pick up a book and read with your students. Using Picture Book Pals as an end of the year reading activity is a great way to assess what students have learned while having a whole lot of fun!
If you want a free copy of Picture Book Pals you can find one at the bottom of this post.

On top of that, you can get some extra “fun pages” for those students who are fast finishers. What should you be reading? Check out these May Picture Book Pal suggestions.
Celebrate Mom with this End of the Year Reading Activity
Mother’s Day is always a fun day to celebrate with students. While not every student has a traditional mom, most students have someone in their lives they would like to celebrate on Mother Day. How to Raise a Mom is a fun book that gives all students instructions on how to raise a mom. From waking her up in the morning to feeding her all the right veggies, your students will love this fun tutorial!
With the How to Raise a Mom Picture Book Pal, you will get some key vocabulary terms in with pre-teaching. Then, you will get to dive into story elements like characters, setting, problem-solution, and sequencing. Your students will also be asked to be book critics and make connections throughout the text. As always, there are comprehension questions and writing activities including. There are also a few display activities for this writing so your classroom can get a fresh face especially with the class mural painting lesson!
What Can Water Be?
The beautifully written and illustrated picture book Water is Water is a fantastic addition to any science class. This wonderful book takes students through all of the phases of the water cycle including: rain, fog, snow, and mist. Students will love the poetic nature of the book and you’ll love its versatility.
The Water is Water Picture Book Pal has all of the things we love for reading class: comprehension, vocabulary, figures of speech, sequencing and more! But it also has the opportunity to use the book across your curriculum. From learning about poetic language in reading class to recreating all the water cycles in science, this Picture Book Pal can help you along the way. In addition to all the fun educational resources, your students can make some art for your classroom or to take home. Plus, you always have that mural for your students to work on together.
Learn about Keeping Water Safe with this End of the Year Reading Activity
The book We Are Water Protectors takes the reader to North America where indigenous people are trying to get people to save the water. By talking about the different things that go into the water and what we can do instead, the people in the text (and those who read it) learn about pollution. Because this is such a great read about nature, this end of year reading activity can be used for history class, science class, or reading class.
We Are Water Protectors Picture Book Pal will help students identify problems and solutions in the text. They can also complete the coloring pages and hang them around school to raise awareness about water pollution and saving the water we have on Earth. As always, there are sequencing, comprehension, and vocabulary practices that are always great for strengthening students’ reading skills.
Engage in Science with Nesting
The educational book Nesting brings us to the home of two robins who are building their nest. Throughout the text, we learn how the next is built as well as how the eggs are cared for while they are in the nest. Finally, the eggs hatch and we get to see the babies experience new things like snakes and storms. We also learn the nest is the baby birds’ safe place.
Not only is this text a great way to introduce biology, you can still focus on reading skills as well. With the Nesting Picture Book Pal, your end of the year reading activity will focus on animals you can see right outside your window. This Picture Book Pal includes activities that focus on: vocabulary, writing your own questions, sequencing, and a fun mural for students to work on together! You can also use some of these vocabulary words in science class and make connections by bringing students outside to be bird watchers for a few minutes a day while you’re reading the story.
The May Picture Book Pals Bundle is available if you love all of these great books! If you’re looking for something different but still love the Picture Book Pals, make sure you check out April’s Picture Book Pal Bundle.
